Something I Learned Today (Let's Quit Pretendin' That Everyone's The Same)

If you sort the IMDB's all-time top 50 by female voters, the entire Lord Of The Rings trilogy make it into the top five. Leaving room for only two other flicks to have such a lofty claim - The Shawshank Redemption and Schindler's List.

Female voters don't consider The Godfather one of the ten best films ever made. They do think Finding Nemo is, though. And they think Pirates Of The Caribbean is the 14th finest piece of cinema ever created.

Male voters think The Godfather is the best film ever made. They think that only The Return Of The King warrants a place in the all-time top five, placing The Fellowship Of The Ring and The Two Towers at #13 and #21 respectively. Schindler's List just misses out on the all-time top ten. Pirates Of The Caribbean can't be found anywhere in the all-time top fifty.

Men prefer The Empire Strikes Back. Women prefer Star Wars.

Men actually rate Casablanca higher than women do (#9 as opposed to #15), but then it's got to be easier to when you're not wasting half your positions with Yet More Rings flicks and PIRATES!!-flicks and FISHIES!!-flicks.

Women love Finding Neverland (placing it at #28). Men don't (placing it nowhere).

Men love Goodfellas (placing it at #22). Women don't (placing it nowhere).

I'd say that the Facts Are In and men clearly have superior taste in celluloid. But then, per'aps I just think that 'cuz I'm a man. Maybe if I was a woman I'd be all about the plotless spectacles!

Weird; that doesn't correspond to my personal experience at all!

That is, okay, a fair amount of guys I know do like the films you mentioned.

But I don't think I lnow any women who'd put those as their top choices.

Though Star Wars sucks. Period. It's not a good movie.

Of Montreal may be tripping me out

You don't know any women who'd consider the Lord of the Rings flicks amongst their favourites? Or Pirates Of The Caribbean (or, heck, anything with Johnny Depp in)? Or even Finding Nemo??

You must run in some funny circles. Is there any chance that your male friends are more normal, typical guys, but that your female friends are all freaky cast-offs from the Planet Weird? I don't mean that in a bad way, of course, just y'know.

And Star Wars isn't just a 'good movie', it's the archtype for Good Movies - the banter, the characters, the DARTH.

You're just jealous because you don't know how to use the force.

How about Fight Club?

The first rule of Fight Club: There's no Place LIke Home!

Men like Fight Club 2% more than women do, though men under 18 like it a full 5% more than women their own age (who themselves like it considerably more than most older women!).

Men consider Fight Club the 28th finest film ever made.

Women consider it more a mere 36th.

Films that women think are better than Fight Club (which men disagree about):

Amélie
Finding Nemo
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The Princess Bride
To Kill a Mockingbird
Gone with the Wind
Life Is Beautiful
American History X
The Pianist
Singin' in the Rain
Crash
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Finding Neverland
The Wizard of Oz
The Notebook
Some Like It Hot
It's a Wonderful Life

Interesting, no? Are there any of those you'd take over Fight Club, Nicole?

PS. I was very sorry to read about Greta. My heart goes out to you.

SLIDE!

I've seen ten of those listed and the answer is no. Fight Club is still in my top 3 or 4 with only Garden State, RepoMan and maybe Say Anything rating higher.

And thanks. Good luck to you with the surgery coming up soon.
